Think Space in Prismen and PB43
How can you upgrade the urban field of Denmark, so that the processes to a greater extent are based on the resources of the local environment and of the social composition? This was a question GivRum wanted to find answers to and at the same time boost the user-driven urban development.
The challenge
In 2011 the first steps towards developing a conference format were taken – a conference format, which could explore the potentials of user-driven urban development and vacant buildings. A development with three general pivotal points:
- Involvement of citizens and alternative co-creators in urban development processes.
- The use of vacant buildings to illustrate the innovative potential inherent in taking unused buildings into use.
- Creation of a space for scientists, politicians, artists, developers, citizens and other interested parties to discuss the latest trends in citizen-related urban development.
Beforehand GivRum had started activities at the old Sadolin Factory at Prag’s Boulevard 43 (PB43) at Amager in Copenhagen, which since 2006 had stood unused. PB43 formed the physical framework for the conference, and therefore part of the challenge was to show the specific projects at PB43 and see them and the now former abandoned factory buildings as the foundation for a more informed debate.
The Solution
Think Space 2011 was the first recurrent conference on urban development, which focuses on user-driven urban development and social sustainability in our cities.
PB43 formed the basis for a three-day conference, which made it possible for officials, grassroots organizations, local and commonly interested people to meet each other at eye level.
The days entailed activities, which were structured around three guiding themes:
- Unused buildings as the city’s hidden resource.
- Temporality as a potential for the city’s development.
- Active citizenship as a basis for sustainable urban development.
With a direct democratic dialogue and by using the city’s unused buildings as a tangible starting point for a debate on the city’s resources, it was possible to visualize the potentials and the resources that can emerge, when the doors for creative projects are opened.
Think Space presented a diverse program of presentations and debates, which focused on the use of unused buildings for cultural and social purposes. The themes discussed in terms of urban projects were temporality, participation and value-creation, and good examples from home and abroad were highlighted.
The conference ended with a big party, where more than 500 people were able to put PB43 on the urban map of city development.

Temporality on the agenda
Think Space has been crucial in putting temporality on the agenda. The conference helps to highlight the potential by activating unused buildings and urban spaces.
Networks
Think Space creates conditions that encourage new networks and communities amongst private and public co-creators. The conference at PB43 also created a lot of publicity for both the projects and the working partnership at PB43.
Hands-on practice
The apprentice task of PB43 stands as a benchmark for interconnection between theory and practice in temporary urban development. The conference Think Space visualized this interconnection for the decision-makers, innovators and citizens.
